U.S. Travel Alert Concerning Mexico

Posted on Sat Mar 14 2009

Information Concerning the Travel Alert

It's been all over the news, the violence in Mexico.  And on February 20th, 2009 a Travel Alert to Mexico was issued by the U.S. Consulate office.

We just wanted to let you know that the violence that is being portrayed on t.v. and the internet is mostly related to the drug cartels and their in-fighting and also in their efforts to hold on to territory, while President Felipe Calderon attempts to heighten the Mexican military presence in areas that are having trouble.  While there has always been an element of this type of activity in Mexico it has been more severe in certain locations recently.

Some of the main cities that are involved are Ciudad Juarez, 550 miles from the locations where we serve, Tijuana, 1400 miles from us, Nogales, about 650 miles from us, and Nuevo Laredo, which is about, 110 miles from us.  All of our ministry efforts are in the Piedras Negras/Acuna area and in the outlaying towns of Guerrero and San Carlos.  We are located quit a distance from the area of major concern.

It's also important to note, that it is not unsual for the U.S. to issue a travel alert during the spring break time as many young people head to Mexico during that time.  These young people are often engaged in activities and visiting locations that often raise their risk of being involved in some type of violence.

While we know that the presence of violence is of concern to many as they hear of the reports coming from the media, we ourselves have not in the combined years of 57 years of service on the field of Mexico, been personally affected nor do we know people personally hurt by this type of violence.

To be sure, we welcome your prayers for the situation that is going on in Mexico.  We ask that you pray for continued safety for us as we travel and minister there.  We ask that you pray for those who live there and daily move about.  We ask that you pray that the violence will not hinder many who in the past have been wiling to serve with us there.  We ask that you pray that the Mexican government might be able to stay strong in it's commitment to dealing with the situation.  We ask that you pray that those men making those decisions, both Presidents Calderon of Mexico and Obama of the U.S. be wise in handling the current conflicts.

Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord will be kept safe.  Proverbs 29:12
This scripture happened to be the one at the top of the webpage, when I opened it up this morning to write this update on the Travel Alert.  What a God we have, that he gives us what we need, when we need it.  Thank you, Lord.
